Cloud 4 in the Spotlight: Education 3.0 & 4.0

Education 3.0 & 4.0

In our first spotlight post, we started from the bigger Cloud 4 picture: we believe that the many challenges in our world call for a profound upgrade in education and it is our intention to help facilitate this upgrade in order to change the world for the better. Cloud 4 resonates with Nelson Mandela’s powerful education quote:

In our second post, we presented the concept of presencing as the capacity we need most: to sense and actualize highest future possibilities.

The current post is about what the profound upgrade in education might look like and where presencing comes in.

The following matrix shows the evolution of the educational system from a theory U point of view. It is based on the changing relationship between learner and educator, and between learner and fellow learners.

Currently, Education 2.0 - which is testing-centered - is worldwide the dominating model in education. Our main challenge is to now move from Education 2.0 to Education 3.0 and 4.0.

Education 3.0 is more learning and student-centered – and not just testing-centered - with the educator as an empathic facilitator of learning processes.

Education 4.0 is co-creation and innovation centered with generative coaching as a major role of the educator. In Education 4.0 learners co-sense and co-shape the future respecting the well-being of the whole: presencing is key to Education 4.0.

Generative coaching refers to the educator holding a space for higher future possibilities to emerge, and acting as a coach to better help learners to co-sense and co-activate their creative capacities. The real teacher in this model is not a single person, but the whole field, the generative field.

A great example of Education 4.0 is the MITx U-lab MOOC with MIT-professor Otto Scharmer as a generative coach. In the fall you are most welcome to join Cloud 4 in the 2026 edition of the U-lab MOOC. Whether you’re interested in exploring Education 3.0 and 4.0 in your own educational setting, or just want to know more about it, taking part in U-lab can be a very inspiring and supportive experience.

In the following video clip the MOOC-course leaders discuss how to make this online course your own: fit to your aspirations, to your need, to your intentions.
