Cloud 8 in the Spotlight: Recent highlights and what’s ahead

In the last Cloud 8 ‘Diversity and Equality in Different Contexts’ blog post, Anthony Thorpe reflected on the history of the Cloud and its beginnings since its foundation in 2016. In this blog, we ask Sibel Inci five questions to learn more about recent activities in Cloud 8 and what she hopes to develop in the future.

How did you become involved in Cloud 8?

I vividly recall 2020—the world felt chaotic, and we all found ourselves in our home offices for the online EAPRIL conference. I was thrilled to present for Cloud 8 and share my research. That presentation was a pivotal moment for me, as it led to my first connection with Nick Gee, who was the Cloud Coordinator at the time before stepping up as Chair and Anthony Thorpe, my co-coordinator. When they approached me about the Co-coordinator role, I knew it was an incredible opportunity to transform my passion for inclusion into impactful action. Since then, our collaboration has been both productive and inspiring. I truly enjoy our brainstorming sessions, whether we're planning the next webinar or selecting our next "Spotlight" guest.

What can you tell us about the Cloud 8 spotlight sessions and some of the other Cloud 8-themed sessions?

Our spotlight sessions are so special. It goes beyond simply introducing our Cloud. For example, two years ago, we started inviting our members to present in our Cloud Spotlight, creating a space for them to showcase their research. Last year, Mirjam Heemskerk-van der Sprong and Alfred Steinbach, who also participated in our webinar, presented highlights of their research, and Milfed Ameziane joined us as well.

Cloud 8-themed sessions are also so exciting. Sometimes there is an intersection with other clouds, but we check all the sessions, find the sessions on diversity, equality and inclusion, and join them. This is how we met with some of our members!

Why does Cloud 8 organise webinars in between conferences, and what sorts of things happen?

Webinars are actually my favourite events because we start organising them months in advance. We make an effort to stay in contact with our members between conferences. The connections we build with attendees and presenters at events such as the Cloud 8 sessions help us cultivate valuable relationships. This process allows us to promote our members to one another.

One example of successful collaboration is the webinar featuring Nele Bylois, Danaë Huijser, and Katrien Hermans. They had presented their posters at the annual conference, and we decided to invite them to elaborate on their work in our webinar. Additionally, Dilek Dede from Türkiye contributed to our webinars. I met her at a workshop in Türkiye and invited her to present at our webinar, which helps us broaden our scope. Liesbet Saenen, whose work on inclusion is incredibly valuable, is another one of our favourite collaborators.

It is the step-by-step organisation that truly makes a difference. We plan our communications, contact the speakers, and then shift our focus to the digital aspect—keeping our LinkedIn group active with scheduled posts to encourage ongoing conversations between events.

What collaborations have developed for you from Cloud 8?

Researchers and practitioners focused on diversity, equality, and inclusion are always eager to collaborate to create a better world. Throughout my interactions within our community, I have found numerous opportunities for collaboration. For instance, we recently participated in a symposium and have another planned with Elke Emmers and her PhD students. Additionally, we are involved in various projects together.

I also appreciate the chance to consult with Anthony, Nick, and other experienced researchers about my research. It is truly rewarding to be part of a community filled with like-minded individuals and unique perspectives. I feel confident knowing that I have the support of this distinctive community. Furthermore, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute as a board member.

What are your hopes for future Cloud 8 activities, and how could people become more involved with Cloud 8?

With our ongoing efforts, we are increasingly attracting more members to our Cloud community, which is now quite substantial. We currently have a growing LinkedIn Group membership. However, I firmly believe in the value of in-person connections. Our association, EAPRIL, is inherently inclusive, and at our conferences, we welcome participants from around the world. I am optimistic that we will continue to reach more people and serve as a bridge to connect them with one another.
